Whitmore Lake's Bark Park Now Open!

Over the last few years, a dedicated group of citizens and business owners have collaborated on the creation of Northfield Township’s first Dog Park, located at the back end of the Jennings Road Athletic Complex (at the end of Jennings Road off of Main Street).  Developed and organized through the Northfield Township Parks and Recreation Commission, the group raised approximately $2,500 and entered into a lease agreement with the Whitmore Lake School District for the construction of a dog park.  The funds raised included maintenance for the park’s first year of operation and all construction costs.  Many individuals donated countless hours and significant research to make this dream a reality.  The Parks and Recreation Commission have created Friends of the Dog Park, an organization that will look after the park’s maintenance and operations over time.

The Commission spent many months researching the benefits of a dog park and analyzing the need in Northfield Township.  The purpose of the Whitmore Lake Bark Park is to allow a safe place for residents of Northfield Township and the surrounding areas to gather and to exercise their dogs off leash within a fenced area, while enjoying the natural beauty of the surrounding athletic complex, which also includes children’s playground, ball fields and wooded trails along the Horseshoe Lake Drain.  It is hoped that the dog park will provide a positive way for community residents and businesses to work together to build a wonderful asset for Northfield Township.

The Bark Park is open 7 days a week from dawn to dusk.  While the park will be open during the winter, signage will be posted notifying visitors that there will be no winter maintenance performed.
